Hello everyone, my names Jake!

I’m a former Marine and incoming senior at USC majoring in Cognitive Science with an emphasis in computer science. CogSci is the interdisciplinary investigation of the mind and intelligence, and that’s exactly what I’ve had the chance to explore in our summer Bookpacking class.

My thesis revolves around how machines (to include biological ones!) learn from and adapt to their environment. There is no better place to study this than at the intersection of literature and history, and this class has provided a unique opportunity to understand the thoughts and walk in the footsteps of some of the great writers who lived through the most turbulent period of recent history.

Beyond the purely academic focus I’ve always been interested and inspired by the humanities. I find that things like poetry and art history offer a rare window through which you get to observe the human condition in its most raw form. Therefor this traveling english literature class has been a dream come true for me, both academically and intellectually!
